Research and Planning: E4 and the Brief

E4 is owned by Channel Four Television Corporation (also known as Channel 4). It was launched in 18th January 2001 and has lasted for 12 years so far. The programmes shown regularly on E4 now are, How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, Hollyoaks, Glee, New Girl, Made in Chelsea, Rules of Engagements. Some films are shown too. Friends was a regular programme until it stopped airing on E4 in 2011.

Most watched programmes:

The primary target audience would be teenagers aged 15+ of any race. This kind of demographics would apply to E4 because of the amount of programmes that use cultural references/humour and crude language. For instance, the programmes shown on E4 are relativity watched by this age group. The secondary target audience would be built around geographics. Most of the programmes shown are American shows aside from The Inbetweeners and Made in Chelsea. So the majority of the audience would be of American background. The other channels owned by this broadcaster are Film4, More4, 4music, Heat, Kerrang!, Kiss TV, Magic, 4seven, The Box and Smash Hits.

An E sting is a short animation indent between programmes and is put before the adverts have started and after they've finished indicating when a programme is starting again after it's break. It's supposed to create humour.

Spluttercup; Finalist in 2011
The genre of this is comedy, it's made to generate humour. The primary audience would be teenagers/young adults or anyone who drinks tea. It's context is to appeal to people who have ever dunked biscuits in tea and it's fallen in. It's to generate humour from something which is annoying when drinking tea.

Curl up, get down E4 man; Finalist 2012
I am not sure what the genre is for this esting but it has a catchy jingle and it makes me laugh so the closest genre I can put it in is comedy. The audience would be the primary audience for the channel, teenagers and young adults. Secondary audience would be anyone from the 70's/80's who remembers what it's like to dress and look like the characters do. They have made the esting like an old hair advert from 'back in the day' and the jingle is catchy. Also, the main character has said to look like Eddie Murphy, so this is probably why the esting was so successful other than for it's graphics.

For my esting I am torn between claymation and and live action. I enjoyed both projects and I found flaws in both of them equally. Live action would take longer to film and claymation would be harder to animate because of the clay. I enjoyed claymation more but I will have to make sure my idea for claymation that I use is simple. My ideas are:

  • There is a race track, E4 logos are turned into cars, it's an E4 version of Mario Kart.
  • A teddy bear is walking with a suitcase, looks a bit like a heist but when he opens up the suitcase, instead of a gun it's an E4 man jumping around.

  1. Sav,

Good research Sav for which you have used a range of sources. You need to add your planning to the post to meet grading criteria though. Please do this ASAP.
