History of Animation (Part 2)

George Pal [& Puppetoons]
He was one of the pioneers of stop motion. He was born in Austria/Hungary and died in May 1980. He graduated from Budpest Academy of Arts. He used stop motion to do Puppetoons, also known as Pal Doll.

He also created Tubby Tuba and Jasper and the haunted house; as one of the patented stop motion techniques he did. It was deemed as controversial as people thought it was racist. It was part of the puppetoons but separated on it's own right.

Tulips shall grow was nominated for an Academy Award for the best Short Subject Cartoon.
It was recognized as the conquest of the Nazis in Holland.

____________

The Brothers Quay [Steven and Timothy]

Steven and Timothy were twins who were said to be one of the worlds most original stop motion animators. They are both directors, screenwriters and animators and both contribute a lot to the world of stop animation.

Usually their work is dark and surreal, which almost always contains some form or puppet or doll coming to life. Some examples of their work would include 'The cabinet of Jan Svankmajer' and 'The comb'.

____________

Adam Shaheen [and cuppa coffee]
He worked with claymation and built his animation using similar substances as what were used in 'Wallace and Gromit' and also 'Thunderbirds'. This may have been his inspiration for him to do this sort of animation in the first place. He is also the original founder of Canada's largest, privately owned animation studio called 'Cuppa Coffee'. A few examples of what he's done are: Celebrity Deathmatch, Bruno, Starviellance etc; Shaheen has skills and expertees in majority of the areas in media. Because he works a lot with MTV, his audiences are going to be more teenage appropriate, as you'll see in the video below.

____________

Nick Park [and Aardman]
Nick park is the creator of Wallace and Gromit and also Shaun the Sheep. He also did Creature Comforts and has won many awards for almost ALL of his work. His is British and is born on the 6th of December. He puts so much detail into his work. For example in Wallace and Gromit in the knitting scenes, he makes sure every strand of plasticine is moved and made so it looks like they are actually knitting. His work is original and sometimes the makers like to make sure their fingerprints are shown on the characters they made, because they are proud of the work they have created and the time consumed into making a full length animations. His first aired programme was Archie's Concrete Nightmare, where the BBC aired it in 1975. At the age of 13 Nick Park had already started and created his own animations using his own materials and equipment. He major inspiration was Dennis the Menace.

____________

Otmar Gutmann

He is the man responsible for creating Pingu! He is a German television producer, animator and director. Otmar founded Pygos group in 1986. Pingu is a clay mated stop animated programme which was televised on CBBC. Pingu is BAFTA award winning. The series was originally made for Swiss television. The characters are identified by their individual catchphrases. Pingu finished airing in 2006 but some of the episodes re run on CBBC from time to time. There is no real language however occasionally the words will be English and Swedish. This allows people of all linguistic backgrounds to follow the story.

Phil Tippett
He was inspired by The seventh voyage of Sinbad, by Ray Harryhausen. A turning point in his career was when George Lucas asked him to create the stop motion used for many different scenes in 3 different Star Wars movies. He took part in 'A New Hope' and 'The Emperor Strikes Back' where he created the alen hybrid.

Tim Burton and Henry Selick

He first started his career in his backyard using stop motion techniques and filming without sound. His most famous stop motion films are, James and the Giant Peach, Nightmare before Christmas, Mars Attacks and the Sleepy Hollow (only one scene has it). Henry Selick was best known for directing these movies and also the film Coraline. Tim Burton is known for his gothic/dark style and his cartoony look probably comes from working with Disney earlier on in  his career. He had a very twisted and memorable imagination which led him to create the most infamous characters such as Edward Scissorhands and Jack.
Willis O'Brien
Ray Harryhausen

  1. Sav,

This is a nicely detailed post in which you explore a range of developers, pioneers and techniques.

You need to complete section 3 to get a merit overall.
